Growth in Railway Transport during the Third Quarter of 2024

The railway transport sector in Croatia has experienced growth in freight and passenger services.

ZAGREB, 11 December 2024 - During the third quarter of 2024, railway transport in Croatia recorded an increase in both freight and passenger segments. Data collected from the railway services market also indicates a rise in revenue generated from freight transport.

Passenger Services
HŽ Putnički prijevoz d.o.o. reported a 10.3% increase in the number of passengers transported compared to last year. Additionally, there was a 15.6% rise in passenger-kilometres, reflecting growing demand for railway passenger services.

Freight Services
In the freight sector, there was an overall increase of 0.7% in goods transported, alongside a 4.5% rise in tonne-kilometres, compared with the same period last year. These figures indicate stable growth and the continuation of positive trends in this segment. Freight undertakings reported a 4.5% increase in revenue from freight transport compared with the previous year.
Apart from HŽ Cargo d.o.o. experiencing a 0.7% decline in the volume of goods transported and a 2.6% reduction in tonne-kilometres, other freight undertakings demonstrated growth. They transported 1.5% more goods and achieved a 12.3% increase in tonne-kilometres. By the end of the third quarter, HŽ Cargo d.o.o. held a 37.3% share of the total volume of goods transported and accounted for 48.9% of the tonne-kilometres achieved.

Activity of Freight Undertakings
Out of a total of 18 freight railway undertakings, 13 were operational, while five remained inactive during the reporting period.
