In the first quarter, more goods carried and passengers transported by rail

The railway carried 11.6 per cent more goods and 34.6 per cent more passengers were transported compared to the same period last year.

ZAGREB, June 20, 2022 - In the railway services market in Croatia, in the first quarter of 2022, freight railway transport carried 11.6% more goods with 9.4% more tonne-kilometres than in the same period of the previous year. At the same time, the new freight railway undertakings carried 10.3 per cent more goods and reached 14.1 per cent more tonne-kilometres. HŽ Cargo d.o.o. carried 13.8 per cent more goods and reached 5.5 per cent more tonne-kilometres. At the end of the first quarter, the new undertakings had a share of 61.7% in the total goods carried and 47.8% in tonne-kilometres performed, which is about the same as in the same period of the previous year.

By comparing modes of transport per achieved train kilometres, passenger transport accounts for 64.9% of the total traffic, while the rest was achieved in the freight transport. Out of all freight railway companies, the largest share of train kilometres of 53.5 per cent was owned by HŽ Cargo d.o.o. while nine new freight undertakings accounted for the rest. At the same time, four new railway freight undertakings were not active. The freight train kilometres increased by 7.1 per cent in total, with the HŽ Cargo. d.o.o. having a 0.3 per cent increase and the new freight undertakings 16.3 per cent more train kilometres in comparison to one year ago. The passenger undertaking had a 0.1% drop in train kilometres. The number of passengers carried increased by 34.6% and the number of passenger-kilometres by 35.3% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.
