5G Techritory 2023: Cooperation and Security are key to the successful development of 5G technology

Tonko Obuljen, President of the Council at HAKOM and incoming BEREC Chair opened the second day of the leading cross-sectoral and cross-border 5G event in Europe and stressed cooperation and security as key to the success of the 5G.

Zagreb, 20 October 2023 – President of the Council at HAKOM and incoming  BEREC Chair Tonko Obuljen, opened the second day of the leading cross-sectoral and cross-border 5G event - 5G Techritory in Riga, Latvia. During his address, Mr. Obuljen acknowledged that the roll out of 5G networks, both public and private, is not only a technical improvement, but also a strategic enabler for industries. Mr. Obuljen said that we are witnessing unprecedented technological advances that redefine the way people communicate, work and live and called on everyone to take security and privacy issues seriously, while accepting the opportunities offered by very high- capacity networks.

The increased complexity of 5G networks opens new avenues for cyber threats." Tonko Obuljen said. "Therefore, as we shape the outlook for 2024, it is essential that we establish robust security frameworks and collaborate with stakeholders to develop resilient networks that safeguard sensitive data and protect user privacy".

In conclusion, the incoming BEREC Chair emphasized that in the future, we must uphold our responsibility to ensure accessibility, security, and equality. He stressed that lessons learned from the previous years and the effective collaboration among governments, regulators, operators, industry players, and civil society will facilitate the successful rollout and utilization of 5G networks.

During the first forum’s day Tonko Obuljen participated in a panel discussion on upcoming 6G mobile networks. He discussed with other prominent speakers the challenges that will require 6G solutions, the associated risks and what can be learned from previous generations of mobile networks.

5G technology is the leading annual forum for the 5G ecosystem in Europe and is organised annually in Riga, Latvia. The Forum brings together key actors in the development of 5G technology to create a strong and aligned 5G ecosystem in Europe and beyond.
