Celebrating 25 Years of CIX

A celebration of 25 years of the Croatian Internet eXchange (CIX) took place at the University Computing Centre (Srce).

ZAGREB, 11 September 2025 - This week, the University Computing Centre (SRCE) marked the 25th anniversary of the Croatian Internet Exchange (CIX). The Minister of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, Damir Habijan, and SRCE Director Ivan Marić delivered welcoming speeches. As part of the event, Director Marić reflected on the origins and development of CIX, emphasising its significance and role. CIX enables the efficient use of transmission capacity, enhances the security of Internet traffic, and improves the overall quality of the Internet, thereby ensuring a better user experience.

CIX was established on 8 September 2000 with the signing of the Memorandum on the Establishment of the National Internet Exchange. Today, it comprises 40 members and forms part of the Republic of Croatia’s critical infrastructure. HAKOM has been a member of CIX since 2021 and takes part in the work of the CIX Forum, an advisory body made up of appointed representatives from CIX members.

The central part of the event was the panel discussion, “The Future of the Internet Begins Locally: The Role of CIX in Digital Sovereignty.” Participants included Damir Habijan, Minister of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation, Ivan Marić, Director/CEO at SRCE, Telekom Boris Drilo, Member of the Management Board of Hrvatski Telekom, Ivan Bešlić, Chief Strategy Officer of Sofascore and Tonko Obuljen. President of the Board at HAKOM.In a discussion lasting just over an hour, participants highlighted the importance of CIX, cooperation, cybersecurity, appropriate regulation, and the use of European Union funds to further the digitalisation of Croatia. Regulation should be based on principles ensuring equal access to technology, security, and protection of end users, while also enabling further development. Cooperation among all stakeholders is essential for the successful continuation of digitalisation and for achieving shared EU objectives.
