Growth in rail passenger and freight transport recorded

Compared to the same period last year a 12.3% increase in carried goods and a 38% increase in transported passengers were recorded. Passenger transport has not reached the 2019 results yet.

ZAGREB, September 9, 2022 - In the Republic of Croatia, in the second quarter of 2022, passenger railway company Hž Putnički prijevoz d.o.o. recorded a 38% increase in passenger transport generating a 41.3% increase in passenger kilometres and 2.1% decline in train kilometres compared to the same period in the previous year. Irrespective of the significant recovery of passenger transport by rail, compared to the second quarter of 2019, the number of passengers is still in 8% decline and there is a 3.7 % decline in passenger kilometres.

At the same time, 12.3 % more freight was transported by rail, generating 17.6 % more tonne-kilometres. HŽ Cargo d.o.o. carried 7.8 % more goods generating an 18.7 % increase in tonne-kilometres, while the new freight undertakings 15.1 % more goods with 16.3 % more tonne-kilometres. The new undertakings have carried 62.5% of transported goods in total, accounting for 47.6% of all tonne-kilometres at the end of the second quarter of this year.

By comparing means of transport per generated train kilometres, passenger transport accounts for 64.1% of the total traffic, while the rest belongs to freight transport. Out of 15 freight railway companies, the largest share of train kilometres of 52.5 % was owned by the HŽ Cargo d.o.o., while the remaining part was generated by nine new freight undertakings. Five new railway freight undertakings were not active. The freight train kilometres increased by 12.4 % in total, with the HŽ Cargo d.o.o. holding 9.2 % more and the new freight undertakings having 16.2 % more train kilometres in comparison to the same period last year.
