HAKOM publishes broadband access area interactive map

PRESS RELEASE

The “Broadband Access Area” interactive map will facilitate and speed up the preparation of projects for the deployment of next generation broadband access networks, co-financed from EU funds, to the units of local self-government and other interested investors.

ZAGREB, 18 November 2013 – As of this day, an interactive map of broadband access areas is publicly available on HAKOM’s web portal. The map shows three speed categories (for speeds from 2 to 30 Mbit/s, from 30 Mbit/s to 100 Mbit/s and for speeds of 100 Mbit/s and above), with a remark that the available speeds are shown in such a way that they can be achieved without significant investments, i.e. with no further installation of substantial cable plant. In addition, information on the existence of infrastructure of one or more operators in a specific area is also displayed.

HAKOM’s project “Creation and display of broadband access” will facilitate the units of local self-government and other interested investors in broadband access, intending to apply for EU funding of broadband projects, to prove the reasoning for the co-financing of broadband projects in accordance with the “EU Guidelines for the application of State aid rules in relation to the rapid deployment of broadband networks”. The published interactive map is thus the first step in the procedure of creating the so-called white, grey and black NGA (Next Generation Access) areas. Such a qualification of areas determines the justification of granting aid under EU funds for the construction of broadband networks.

In the broadband areas mapping process, HAKOM collected the data on broadband access speed from operators, which is available to a subscriber at a specific home address (“Home passed”). Collected point data were processed and polygons were created which represent the areas of broadband access of a specific speed throughout the territory of the Republic of Croatia. The polygons are particularly highlighted if a specific area contains the infrastructure of two or more different operators, and the data will be updated every three months to ensure the current state of the real data representation.
