Target users in the flood affected area of Slavonia received high-speed Internet before deadline

PRESS RELEASE

The second to last round of tenders for the development of broadband infrastructure has been completed and 29 target users from flood affected areas of Slavonia received high-speed Internet access. Schools, health care institutions and fire stations were connected to high-speed Internet 6 months before the deadline.

ZAGREB, 3 December 2014 – A total of 11 elementary schools and high schools, 10 health care institutions and outpatient clinics and 8 fire stations in an area of Slavonia known as Cvelferija, which had been affected by catastrophic floods, received high-speed Internet access under HAKOM’s Programme for the Development of Internet and High-Speed Internet Access in Areas of Special State Concern, in Highland and Mountain Areas and on the Islands. Target users were connected 6 months before the deadline and HAKOM checked the quality of all connections and disbursed aid amounting to a little over HRK 2.6 million to Hrvatski Telekom.

As a reminder, on 30 July HAKOM invited a public tender for the granting of aid for the development of broadband infrastructure in flood affected areas. The most favourable tender was submitted by Hrvatski Telekom who built its network up to target users. Although the deadline for the completion of the project was mid-April of 2015, it invested additional efforts to shorten the deadline and succeeded.

HAKOM’s aid programme thus enters the final stage in terms of aid for the development of infrastructure. There is one more tender in progress and after that tender the total amount of HRK 50 million earmarked for the development of infrastructure will be spent but two other stages of the programme will be continued: development of socially useful applications and services and provision of hardware for target users of developed applications. HAKOM’s aid programme is aimed at the entire broadband ecosystem: infrastructure for high-speed internet, applications promoting Internet use and benefits for citizens, and hardware such as servers and other equipment necessary for the functioning of applications.
