Increase in rail freight transport and decrease in rail passenger transport

Compared to the same period of the previous year the rail freight transport increased for 4.9%

ZAGREB, 1 December 2021 - In the railway services market of the Republic of Croatia, in the third quarter of 2021, freight railway transport increased for 4.9% with almost same number of tonne kilometres performed compared to the same period of the previous year. At the same time, new freight railway undertakings accounted for 4.3 percent more goods and 3.4 percent more tonne-kilometres. The Croatian company HŽ Cargo d.o.o. accounted for 5.7 percent more goods and 2.6 percent less tonne-kilometres. At the end of the third quarter, the new undertakings had a 57.4% share in transported goods and 44.7% share in tonne kilometres.

By comparing modes of transport per completed train kilometres, freight transport accounts for one third of the total traffic with 33.1 percent and passenger transport for the remaining two thirds. Out of all freight railway companies, the largest share of train kilometres with 56.7 percent was owned by HŽ Cargo, while the remaining ten new freight undertakings accounted for the remaining amount. The train kilometres dropped by 1 percent, where the HŽ Cargo dropped by 1.8 percent and new freight undertakings recorded increase of 0.1 percent train kilometres. Passenger transport had 3.9% less train kilometres compared to the same period last year. The number of passengers transported dropped by 2.9 per cent and the number of passenger kilometres increased by 41.7 pe cent.
