Rail market: Passengers are attracted back to rail, but fewer transported goods recorded

Rail carried 10.2 percent more passengers and 9.9 percent fewer goods compared to the same period last year.

Zagreb, 15 December 2023-In the third quarter of this year, HŽ Putnički prijevoz d.o.o. carried 10.2 percent more passengers, and the number of passenger kilometres increased by 1.9 percent compared to the same period last year. At the same time, when it comes to rail freight indicators, a downward trend in freight transport has been observed. Freight rail transport carried 9.9 percent fewer goods in the third quarter of this year, with a 14 % reduction in tonne-kilometres than in the same period of the previous year. Freight undertakings also recorded a 3.1 % decrease in revenues from the transport of goods compared to the same period of the previous year.

The historic freight undertaking, HŽ Cargo d.o.o., carried 12.8 percent fewer goods with 15.9 percent less tonne-kilometres, while other freight railway companies transported 8 % fewer goods and achieved 11.7 percent less tonne-kilometres. At the end of the third quarter of this year, HŽ Cargo d.o.o. had a share of 37.8 percent of total transported goods and 52.4 % of realised tonne kilometres. Among the 19 freight operators, 13 were commercially active and six did not carry goods in the third quarter.
